چکیده

IN CONGESTIVE heart failure the blood volume has generally been considered to be elevated." 6, 14, 15, 16, 18, 21t 24 Recent investigations by Prentice and co-workers19 and by Ross and associates,20 using P32-tagged erythrocytes, have suggested that the blood volume in heart failure often is not increased. The importance of hypervolemia in both the physiology and therapy of cardiac failure has stimulated the study of this problem. Nylin and Hedlund'6 in 1947 summarized the opinions of various investigators concerning the efficiency of the various methods. It was concluded that both the dye and the carbon monoxide methods may produce falsely high values because of leakage of dye substance from the vascular system and because of absorption of carbon monoxide by the myoglobin. More accurate determinations of blood volumes utilizing radioactive material2' 4 713, 15, 19, 22, 23 are now available. Total blood volumes are usually calculated from either the red cell or plasma volume, utilizing the hematocrit reading. Higher values are usually obtained when calculating whole blood volumes from plasma volumes, presumably, because of leakage of plasma bound substances from the vascular space during the period between injection and sampling. Comparison of red cell and whole blood volume as performed using both chromium-51-tagged red cells and iodine-125-tagged albumin and using I-131-tagged albumin and extrapolated red cell volume.

BACKGROUND Our facility's current blood volume measurement protocol has involved separate measurement of plasma and red cell volumes. The purpose of this study is to determine whether measurement with a recently FDA-approved, one-compartment semiautomated system provides similar accuracy. METHODS Blood volume measurement was performed on 27 volunteers using our current protocol followed immed...

Mechanisms of hemolysis in iron deficiency anemia. Further studies.

L AYRISSE, LINARES, AND ROCHE in 19651 demonstrated that there is a reduction in the survival of radiochromium ( 51Cr) and di-iso-pro-pylfluoro-phosphonate (32DFP)-tagged red cells from subjects with marked iron deficiency anemia#{176} associated with hookworm infection. They observed that these erythrocytes also had a short survival when they were injected in normal recipients and nearby norma...

Red Cell and Plasma Volumes (circulating and Total) as Determined by Radio Iron and by Dye

1. Application of the principles of hydrodynamics to the problem of blood flow and blood volume indicates that the calculation of blood volume and cell volume from the venous hematocrit and plasma volume (as determined by the dye method) is subject to considerable error. 2. This conclusion is borne out by determinations of total cell volume by viviperfusion and with the use of radioactive iron ...
